Zombie Walk
Stepping lively? Not likely at first parade of undead

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Kurt Chaney will be taking a pleasant stroll through town on Saturday, and he's inviting the rest of
Columbus to join him.

The only stipulation: You must be dead. Or undead.

"Basically, I want a horde of zombies," Chaney explained.

The 27-year-old horror fan has organized the first Zombie Walk Columbus. Folks dressed as resurrected,
brain-hungry corpses will assemble at 5 p.m. at Goodale Park, then shamble aimlessly up and down N. High
Street.

Well, not quite aimlessly.

"We do have a route," Chaney said. "It's about 2 1/2 miles."

The cardio-challenged undead should not be worried about keeping up. The pace will be more akin to the
slow- moving zombies of Night of the Living Dead than the fast-moving infected of 28 Weeks Later.

"We won't be doing any running," Chaney said with a laugh. "The opposite of what I want is to scare people
who don't want to be scared. But I do want to cater to people who like horror and can't wait for Halloween to
come around so they can get dressed up."

That includes Anna Little, 35, of Columbus, who plans to attend in her zombie finest along with a handful of
friends.

A member of the Ohio Roller Girls, Little's league name is Donna de la Muerte -- aka Donna of the Dead.

"I'm a fan of pretty much any zombie movie but especially the (George A.) Romero ones where they don't
run," she said. "I'm a firm believer in rigor mortis."

Similar zombie walks have taken place in New York, San Francisco and Toronto, to name a few. The largest
walk -- which attracted almost 900 participants -- occurred last year at the Monroeville Mall in Pittsburgh,
where the zombie classic Dawn of the Dead (1978) was filmed.

Chaney, who lives in Martinsburg and works at a collection agency in Westerville, expects a crowd of about
50. In his wildest zombie dreams (nightmares?), the horde will reach 100.

Walkers are encouraged to take canned goods for the Mid-Ohio FoodBank.

To help potential zombies get into the spirit, Sin City Hair, 1644 N. High St., will offer free "makeup bruises"
on Saturday. More elaborate makeovers, including cuts and gashes, cost extra.

"A whole different side of people comes out when they have their faces covered," owner Nio Slowek said.

Even if only a few show up, Chaney said, the walk will go on. Nor is he concerned about the possibility of
rain.

"A lot of the best zombie movies are wet ones."
